Same Day CEREC Crowns

At Wilmington Family Dental, we are proud to offer our patients the convenience, ease, and long-lasting care that same-day CEREC dental crowns provide. With same-day crowns, patients can enter our office and complete their restorative treatment in a single appointment with no need to wear a temporary crown or wait for an outside dental lab to manufacture a dental restoration.

What Is a Dental Crown?

Also called a cap, a dental crown is a type of porcelain dental restoration that is designed to completely cover the exposed, above-the-gum-line portion of a tooth. Dental crowns are hollow inside and designed to look just like a natural tooth on the outside, with tooth-enamel-like porcelain dyed to blend in with the surrounding teeth.

Dental crowns can address a variety of cosmetic and restorative concerns such as restoring a tooth following a root canal procedure, dental injury, a significant chip, or a compromised dental filling.

What Is the Difference Between Traditional Dental Crowns and Same-Day Crowns?

The treatment process, design process, and manufacturing process differ greatly between traditional dental crowns and same-day CEREC crowns. With traditional crowns, dental impressions are taken (often using trays and sticky dental putty). The impressions are then sent to an external dental lab where a dental crown is manufactured and shipped back to the dentist's office for placement. Throughout this time, a patient must wear a temporary crown until they can return to the office for a second appointment to have the permanent crown placed.

The "CEREC" of same-day CEREC crowns stands for chairside economical restoration of esthetic ceramic and is the term used to refer to a method of designing and creating dental crowns right within our dental office.

How It Works: The Same-Day CEREC Crown Treatment Process

Tooth Preparation

Our dentist first prepares your tooth for treatment. This process involves removing a small portion of tooth enamel around the exterior of the tooth. This makes room for your dental restoration and ensures a secure bond between your natural tooth and the porcelain restoration.

We use local anesthetics to ensure patients experience no pain or discomfort during the treatment process.

3D Digital Impressions

Once the tooth is prepared, we use a digital scanner to take three-dimensional impressions of the patient's teeth. These images and data are then uploaded into our design software.

Design Software

We use our design software to create a dental restoration to your exact specifications. We use the software to ensure a perfect fit, a comfortable bite, and a beautifully natural look.

Precision, In-Office Manufacturing

We then use our in-office milling machine to create your restoration from 100% pure porcelain.

Finishing Touches and Permanent Placement

Once completed, our dentist can make any necessary adjustments to your dental crown before using dental cement to securely bond it to your natural tooth. Once the dental cement has cured and set, your treatment will be complete and your tooth's form, function, and health will be fully restored.

The Benefits of Same-Day CEREC Crowns

Same-Day CEREC crowns offer patients several advantages and benefits over traditional dental crowns, such as:

  • Only One Dental Appointment Is Needed - With same-day crowns, the evaluation, tooth preparation, design, manufacture, and placement occur during a single visit to our dental office.
  • Digital Impressions Mean No Mess or Discomfort - Same-day crowns are designed using digital impressions obtained with a three-dimensional scan of the patient's teeth. So, there is no need to use dental trays and putty to create physical impressions.
  • Simpler Treatment with No Temporary Dental Crown - Same-day crowns are permanent and placed during a single appointment, so there is no need for patients to wear a temporary dental crown.
  • Personalized, Custom Design for a Natural Look - We use advanced computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) software to create a customized design that achieves a perfect fit and natural look while blending in seamlessly with the neighboring teeth.
  • Precision Milling With 100% Porcelain - Our precision milling machine uses 100% porcelain to create same-day crowns exactly to each patient's unique specifications. CEREC crowns fit comfortably and are durable, long-lasting, and natural-looking.
